About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. About the Role:

  • Charm is continuing to grow its injection capacity, and we need an experienced injection engineering expert to help validate new injection sites and the interplay between the injection site with our bio oil.
  • You will work with our analytical chemistry team to ensure we can measure and correlate all the key properties of bio oil to successful injection, defining our injection process clearly.
  • This may change with different oils and injection sites, and you will continue to re-correlate and change the process as needed.
  • You will work with a team of internal and external engineers to stand up infrastructure at new injection sites, matching our state-of-the-art process understanding at each one. Due to the changing landscape of geologic formations, you may need to adjust process steps depending on the factors identified during the well-permitting phase.
  • You will interface with our operations engineering team, as you hand off new equipment and injection sites to them for continuous improvement and support.
  • You will constantly check in with the operations engineering team to learn about bottlenecks and pain points to improve the throughput and operability of the system.
  • You will interface with our controls and automation team to continuously uplevel our automation to minimize the number of operators needed to perform successful injections, reducing the cost of our tons of Carbon Dioxide Removal.
  • This role will report to our Head of Engineering and interface cross functionally with operations and analytical chemistry.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Develop and continue to improve processes for the safe and permanent injection of bio oil at a variety of different injection sites, each with different permitting and geological requirements.
  • Create clarity for both the Charm team and external parties as to why certain processing steps are or aren’t necessary to meet the regulatory requirements as well as preserving the subsurface and develop processes to meet those requirements.
  • Design and work alongside a team to build and commission processing systems for the bio-oil pumping, storage and transloading facilities at injection pads to ensure safe and efficient movement of bio-oil through necessary processing steps to the wellbore.
  • Design robust and redundant systems that will allow our injection systems to grow to support tens of thousands of tons of bio oil with no single point of failure.
  • Perform FMEA on all new hardware in collaboration with process safety professionals. Design and implement safeguards for scaled systems including engineered safeguards and administrative safeguards (i.e. good operating documentation is required).
  • You will be expected to travel as needed to ensure that our injection sites are stood up and commissioned and handed off to our operations engineering team appropriately.

You Bring:

  • Experience developing new oil and gas processes that require a strong first principles understanding of the process and the ability to articulate that first principles understanding to external stakeholders who are approving the new process for production (think: regulators!).
  • An ability to scale those new processes from bench top through commercial scale in a matter of months, utilizing both internal and external resources to make the impossible timelines possible.
  • An unrelenting attention to safety, including the entire pyramid of engineering controls.
